LANIGAN'S TRAVELS

Spring MVOR 2014
(yep, still learning)
Exeter, MO - Ever Heard of it?
Well, let me tell you a little about Exeter. It's full of chicken farms, rooster farms and there's a lot of crowing and clucking going on.
We were fortunate to have our Spring 2014 MVOR in Exeter Mo, and what a great time! The land owners had the perfect location for about 200 of us to camp, cave, play, socialize and just maybe partake in a cocktail or two. Camping on private property is a guaranteed good time!
We began our weekend adventure with a five hour drive in high wind gusts through the mountainous beauty of Missouri. Pulling a 1,000 pound pop up trailer. We arrived safe and sound, just a little wind blown. Many of our friends had already arrived so we had no trouble finding the campground.
Our first encounter of the weekend was with the Kirsten Alvey-Mudd, who just happened to have a few baby bats with her. I, of course, wanted to pet one and she kindly agreed. The following 10 minutes were spend trying to find where the baby bat had located itself in my clothing. He was tired, probably hungry and looking for somewhere very dark and ended up inside my jacket in my lower back region. Such a cutie.
From there, the weekend rolled into a huge ball of fun. Large chairs, zip lines (I only did the practice zip line and my abdominal muscles are so sore I can't believe it!), lots of campfires, lots of good conversation, a few adult beverages, fireworks and oh, did I mention FUN!
On Saturday, Jim suggested we take the short trek over to Roaring River State Park. Tony and Mary had suggested a particular hike that we wanted to try. So.... off we go. We had heard there would be a "lot" of kids there but didn't think much of it. When we got to the park, we realized it was "Kid's Fishing Day" at the park. Approximately 1,200 kids showed up to go fish in the park, which is well known for the Trout. What fun to watch all the children! However, we walked on to the trail. Very few were at the park for the hiking. We enjoyed a great 3.5 mile hike (uphill) that ended at Fire Tower. This particular Fire Tower has apparently not been in use for a while though. (We climbed to the top of it and had to look UP to the top of the trees). Great day, Great Hike.
Saturday evening was full of exciting stories (were there possibly a few tall tales?) and many new friendships made.
Alicia did a fantastic job keeping the MVOR meeting in line (yes, we actually have meetings at our events) and the following bonfire and fireworks had even the local Sherriffs interested.
Does this group know how to have fun or what?
If you are interested, feel free to view the photos!
