Hello everyone,
It's Mardi Gras Season! The time for parades, beads, floats and lots of seafood!
But just how long will our seafood be plentiful?
The oceans are massive, powerful, indestructible………… right?
WRONG.
Our oceans are being destroyed in many ways but very few people realize that it's happening.
Please take a moment to read below.
WHAT ARE WE DOING TO OUR OCEANS?
WHAT ARE WE DOING TO OUR OCEANS?
POLLUTION
12) Styrofoam cups 6) Plastic bags
11) Plastic Beverage Bottles 5) Glass pieces
10) Glass Beverage Bottles 4) Styrofoam
9) Plastic Straws 3) Plastic pieces
8) Metal Beverage Cans 2) Paper
7) Plastic caps and lids 1) Cigarettes/Cigars
What else besides pollution is damaging our oceans?
OVERFISHING
The practice of commercial and non-commercial fishing which depletes a fishery by catching so many adult fish that not enough remain to breed and replenish the population. Overfishing exceeds the carrying capacity of a fishery.
Catching too many fish; fishing so much that the fish cannot sustain their population. The fish get fewer and fewer, until finally there are none to catch.
Fishing with a sufficiently high intensity to reduce the breeding stock levels to such an extent that they will no longer support a sufficient quantity of fish for sport or commercial harvest.
Why is overfishing a problem?
We are losing species as well as entire ecosystems. As a result the overall ecological unity of our oceans are under stress and at risk of collapse.
We are in risk of losing a valuable food source many depend upon for social, economical or dietary reasons.
We are affecting the food chain.
What can we do to help?
Think sustainability when you purchase fish.
